Can't Keep A Witch Down - The Return of Southern Spooks

Hello my pretties! It feels so good to be writing to you all again. That is, if there are still any of you out there reading this. Even so, hello and welcome. If you're new here, I've been on, what one may call, a hiatus for the past few months. (And a very unannounced one at that, which I apologize for.) Between normal life, haunt life, blog life, and my nonexistent love life (not a contributing factor, but it doesn't hurt to put it out there that I'm single. #FindJazAHauntHubby2018), things got very hectic and gave me very little time to be present on any forms of social media. Alas, once you catch the haunt bug it never truly leaves you, and with my time off I've had a lot of time to come up with some special treats for you.

Let's consider this a new beginning for Southern Spooks. I'm returning to you with a new format that spans between multiple forms of social media. On top of posting here on Blogger every Tuesday, I will also be posting AUDIO COMMENTARIES/PODCASTS  for anyone in the blind community or people who don't have time to sit and read and would rather listen along (which may or may not contain extra details or side comments), so keep a look out for that starting in the next week or two while my team and I work out the kinks.

In between blog posts, there will be new and fun activities to get you, the Spook Squad, involved. There will be writing competitions, photo competitions, and other challenges to help you learn more about haunt all while having fun. These will be scattered between the Southern Spooks blog as well as the Southern Spooks Facebook page which will appear randomly, so keep your notifications on! The winners of some of these competitions have a chance to have their work displayed on the site and will also get the chance to choose post topics, cover art, or other activities in the future. (And for an added bonus, some lucky winners will be chosen to help with a secret project coming next year. Shhh.)

This month, we are introducing THEMES that we will focus on for each month. With auditions for local haunts starting in a few months, it is now crunch time to get your monologues chosen and memorized, get your body and mind into shape for the torture you're about to go through, and hone in on your special skills and crafts, whatever those may be. So, this month we will be focusing on Auditioning: Phase 1. I say 'Phase 1' because I believe there are two parts to an audition: the preparation and the practice. So, we shall break the two parts up during the two months before auditions actually roll around in August/September. As an apology for my absence for the past few months, today, I will be posting two entries: This one and one focussing on monologues to get the ball rolling on this month's theme.

On a more...personal note, I would like to thank the individuals who have stuck by me through my absence and helped me push myself to get back on the horse and continue doing what I love. (You know who you are.) There are always times in people's lives where there's nothing around them except darkness, but luckily for haunters, we thrive in the shadows. For now, Jaz is back and better than ever with more stories, tales, tips, and tricks up her sleeve just for you, my pretties.

Hopefully, you enjoy all the changes coming your way, and until next time...
Stay spooky and happy hauntings!

From your Wicked Witch of the South,
Jaz

What is Haunt Season?

Something I picked up quickly when I first started getting into haunt was the times of year that things were happening. When haunted attractions are live and open, it's referred to as "Haunt Season" (which, in the south and to my great displeasure, is always misheard as "hunting season"). Haunt season begins at different times for different people. For the actors, behind the scenes crew and volunteers, haunt season usually begins in the first week of September through the first week of November, but for the owners and creative team, haunt season starts up in February or March and lasts until the first week of December. (This doesn't include conventions and special events which are scattered throughout the year specifically for haunters.) For the cast, crew, and volunteers, auditions will usually roll around in the first week of September, giving the haunt enough time to hire them, train their cast, and have early opening dates for that year's haunt.
