And The Winner Is...


In last week's post, we talked about monologues for everyone's upcoming haunt auditions and the first ever Writing Competition took place on the Southern Spooks Facebook page where I asked everyone to take their favorite monologue and revise it to show their personal creativity. Many of you sent in your submissions and there were plenty of awesome pieces of work. Sadly, not everyone can win. Out of all the entries, one stood out among the rest. This monologue showed the prime example of taking a script and making it your own. Not only did this individual rewerite almost the entire script, but he also kept the underlying tone and flow of the original scene. When some take on the task of  reworking a script, they tend to insert lines or details that either make no sense to the original script's contex or hold no importance to the overall goal of the piece. The winner of last week's contest knew his source material enough to vastly change it, but keep the essence of what made the scene what it was originally, and for this we applaude him. So, we at Southern Spooks are proud to announce the winner of last week's writing competition: Vincent Lambertini, from RISE Haunted House in Tickfaw, LA.

"Know Your Place"

So, I'm sure a few of you are wondering why I stopped writing my blog for a while now. Sure, I can say that "I got busy during haunt season" or "I've been working on blah blah blah..." (insert terrible excuse here). But I think it's better to be honest. I mean, we're all one big haunt family, right? When I first started haunt, I used to have this spark. I would talk about it non-stop. I'd want to learn everything I could. I would get these butterflies in my stomach every time I thought about it. I was so passionate that I didn't care what anyone thought. Haunt was my life. I thought it would always be like that. I'm not saying I lost that spark, but it's very true to say that some people wanted to snuff out my spark. Some people snuffed it out without even realizing they did it. It really hit me when I went to my first haunt convention...and then it just spiraled out of control from there.  For years, I had worked my ass off...

What is Haunt Season?

Something I picked up quickly when I first started getting into haunt was the times of year that things were happening. When haunted attractions are live and open, it's referred to as "Haunt Season" (which, in the south and to my great displeasure, is always misheard as "hunting season"). Haunt season begins at different times for different people. For the actors, behind the scenes crew and volunteers, haunt season usually begins in the first week of September through the first week of November, but for the owners and creative team, haunt season starts up in February or March and lasts until the first week of December. (This doesn't include conventions and special events which are scattered throughout the year specifically for haunters.) For the cast, crew, and volunteers, auditions will usually roll around in the first week of September, giving the haunt enough time to hire them, train their cast, and have early opening dates for that year's haunt. Don’t Be A Gus

Happy Holidays and Happy New Years everyone! I hope you all enjoyed some well deserved time off with your family and loved ones before school and work starts up again. I sure as hell know that I'm excited for my little get away in the next few days, far away from anything haunt related. I can finally give my brain the small breather it needs, so when I come back I can kill it with this season's preparations. (I'm already dying just thinking about all the working out I'll be doing to mold myself into some crazy, acrobatic, high energy...thing. Damn, I really need to figure out this character soon.) With the new year, there are always new opportunities on the horizon. With every season that comes and goes new job positions open up, new roles are created, cast members cycle in and out, and the chances of doing more are endless.
